Here are some common myths, busted by your VCS mechanical family.

Myth #1: It’s okay to leave food leftovers in the fridge for weeks.

Normally, when we have leftovers, we surely keep them in the fridge to minimize food waste a much as we can. But how long should we keep food inside the fridge? Many of us think that we can store food as long as it doesn’t smell bad but this is not true. The maximum number of days should only be four days. More than that could mean increasing the risk of food poisoning. Medical experts also advise that we reheat our food that is stored for at least 4 days to decrease risks of food poisoning. Use the freezer as well to keep longer.

Myth #2: It’s always best to allow frozen food to thaw at the countertop.

Most homeowners take their food out of the fridge to thaw but this is a big No-No! We agree that it does thaw faster at the countertop but you’re also allowing bacteria to seep onto the clean kitchen counter - a host for health concerns. Just let it defrost inside the fridge, slowly but surely. The refrigerator is also the best place to marinate your food while defrosting it.

Myth #3: Putting baking soda inside the fridge is the best way to eliminate bad smells.

Baking soda has been found to have the ability to absorb foul odors and clean countertops well. It’s very common to put some inside the refrigerator to lessen the bad smells a bit. Instead of baking soda, using activated charcoal is the best option to get rid of smells.

Activated charcoal can absorb odor more effectively and efficiently since it has a bigger surface area as compared to that of baking soda.

Myth #4: There’s no need to organize the contents of the refrigerator.

Some people underestimate the organization inside the fridge but actually, it’s very important because some areas of the appliance are cooler than others. Having this knowledge will allow you to organize the contents depending on how quickly they can spoil.
